Longwave - New Isle of Man longwave station to broadcast from Radio Caroline's old offshore location.
STATION GETS RADIO CAROLINE'S OLD SPOT GOVERNMENT has given the green light for a long wave radio transmitter to be stationed five miles off the coast of Ramsey in the same spot used by Radio Caroline in the 1960s. Isle of Man International Broadcasting has received approval in principle from the territorial sea committee to position a platform with the transmitter and antenna at the site. It will mean the creation of between 40 and 50 jobs in the north of the Island. The firm had originally wanted to build a mast at Ayre but this was opposed by residents, Bride Commissioners and Ayre MHK Edgar Quine. The Council of Ministers threw out the plans in January this year following a public inquiry. IoMIB founder Paul Rusling revealed news of the off-shore site at the firm's annual meeting last night. He said: 'The station is expected to launch towards the end of 2002 and we are looking at employing between 40 and 50 staff, both full-time and part-time.' The cost of the unmanned platform and equipment will be around the £5.25 million mark, while promoting the station and working capital mean it's a £12 million project, the funds for which Mr Rusling says will be fully raised early in the new year. The station's studio and offices will be situated in Ramsey. Mr Rusling added: 'The launch will bring greater diversification to the Island's economy, helping the further development of the north of the Island by bringing a significant number of all year round jobs to Ramsey while generating substantial revenue for the Treasury.' Marketing director Geoff Holliman said: 'The project has a lot to offer the Island, particularly post foot-and-mouth and September 11. 'More than ever the Isle of Man needs a powerful voice and our radio station, reaching into millions of homes, will sharpen the Island s international focus.'

Propagation - Twenty five minute Sporadic E opening to Spain and Portugal this morning. Then a gap until the band opened up to Italy, San Marino and the Balkans up to 108 MHz for two and a half hours. Couldn't listen very much as I was otherwise distracted by my 3 year old son riding his bike. DX does come second! Also a lot of the time, there was so much noise across the band, that nothing was RDS-ing apart from the local London stations.

UK stations - Some stations in the Lincs FM Group have changed PI codes recently. Ridings FM is now C69E, Trax FM (Doncaster) is C49E, Trax FM (Worksop) is C59E, Rutland is now C79E. Fosseway and Lincs FM are unchanged. (Thanks, Neil)

Propagation - Large amount of Sporadic E again today. I was able to tune around from 2000-2130 UTC, but it was interesting to find out eventually what the PI:1008 station is on 88.0, and to see R Alma Mater coming in yet again.

Propagation - Almost 6 hours of Sporadic E today. Possibly Melilla and Canary Islands, though with so many Spanish stations on channel, it's not 100%. Also Space 101.7 in Southall wiped out 99-104 MHz later on with broadband noise. Even locals like Jazz FM were unlistenable and un-RDS-able. The SER station on 104.3 had curious PI:0239, but I can't find a SER station on that channel.
